Biography:
Ryuk is a Shinigami, or death god, from the Japanese manga series Death Note, created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. He is bored with the Shinigami realm and its monotonous existence, leading him to drop a Death Note into the human world.
The Death Note allows any human who writes a name in it while picturing the person's face to kill them. Ryuk finds amusement in the chaos and destruction that follows when a high school student, Light Yagami, discovers the notebook. He essentially acts as an observer, providing commentary and generally being entertained by Light's actions.
Despite being a Shinigami, Ryuk has a rather quirky personality, most notably his addiction to apples. He is bound to remain with the user of the Death Note until they die or the notebook is destroyed. Ultimately, in the anime adaptation, it is Ryuk himself who writes Light's name in the Death Note, ending his reign as "Kira".
